European natural gas prices to be on downward trend in 2022

European natural gas prices are expected to be on downward trend in 2022, Trend reports with reference to Capital Economics, the UK-based research and consulting company.

The company expects the prices to stand at 55 euros per MWh in Q1 2022, as compared to the forecast 65 euros per MWh in Q4 2021. The subsequent quarters of 2022 also have bearish outlook with 45 euros in Q2, 35 euros in Q3 and 25 euros in Q4.

The US natural gas prices will also be on decline with $5 per mBtu in the last quarter of 2021, before falling to $4.5 in Q1, 2022, $4 in Q3, $3.5 in Q3 and $3 in Q4.

Spot Asian LNG will end Q4 2021 with $25 per mBtu, then declining to $21.3 per mBtu in Q1 2022, $17.5 in Q2, $13.8 in Q3 and $10 in Q4.

In parallel to natural gas, coal prices will also decrease, with coal (Rotterdam) standing at $180 per ton in Q4, $153 per ton in Q1 2022, $125 per ton in Q2, $98 per ton in Q3 and $70 per ton in Q4.

The prices for coal (Newcastle) are expected to amount to $180 per ton in Q4 2021, $155 per ton in Q1 2022, $130 per ton in Q2, $105 per ton in Q3 and $80 per ton in Q4.
