By Amina Nazarli - Trend:

The economic climate today in the gas world is extremely good for supporting a Trans Caspian gas pipeline, Julian Bowden, Senior Visiting Research Fellow at OIES told Trend.

“Gas prices are very high, and look to remain high for at least the next 2-3 years,” he said.

According to the expert, a short pipeline could be built very quickly between platforms in the Turkmen sector and platforms in the Azeri sector.

“On capacity, a pipeline of say 10 bcma would require relatively low capital investment and its engineering should be straightforward,” he explained.

Bowden stated that Europe is looking for additional gas supplies and that gas could be sold in export markets in Turkey and further south into Europe.

“Further, it could help Turkmenistan reduce its methane emissions and turn these emissions into marketable gas,” he clarified.

Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline envisages transportation of Turkmen gas to Europe through Azerbaijan.

Turkmenistan is studying the possibility of bringing its energy products to the European market. To this end, a 300-kilometer gas pipeline will have to be laid along the Caspian seabed to the shores of Azerbaijan.

Turkmenistan has declared its readiness to supply Europe with an annual volume of up to 40 billion cubic meters of gas.
