BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.13

Trend:

The Kazakh and Russian governments are negotiating on the joint development of a new light aircraft "Baikal", Talgat Lastayev, chairman of the Civil Aviation Committee under the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development of Kazakhstan, told Trend.

According to Lastayev, the lack of acceptable options for replacing aircraft and high taxes on new imported airplanes still prevent the development in this sector.

“The main driver of this sector is still the AN-2 aircraft. According to the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, currently there are 323 AN-2 airplanes in the register, but only 200 of them have a certificate of airworthiness. It’s obvious that they are morally and technically outdated and require to be replaced," he said.

The official also noted that the joint development of the "Baikal" aircraft expected to be produced by Kazakhstan Aviation Industry company is aimed to solve the above mentioned problem.
