By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Kyrgyzstan could become a corridor for the transportation of Iranian goods to the member states of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and East countries, Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Rostam Ghasemi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

He made the remark in a meeting with Minister of Economy and Finance of Kyrgyzstan Daniyar Amangeldiev.

According to Ghasemi, the two countries have great potential for transit cooperation. At present, it is possible to transit goods from the Iran’s Bandar Abbas port to Kyrgyzstan via railway.

"This potential can be enhanced by using existing agreements with Turkmenistan and Central Asian countries," he added.

The minister noted that it is also possible to develop air transport between the two countries. Currently, there are flights between Iran’s Mashhad city and the Kyrgyzstan’s Bishkek city.

The Iranian minister welcomed the proposal of the Kyrgyz side to establish a joint fund for development of investment between the two countries.

Ghasemi stressed that the proposal can support the participation of Iranian companies in various economic sectors of Kyrgyzstan, as well as Kyrgyz companies in various economic sectors of Iran.

"Iran definitely welcomes this proposal. The joint fund can create opportunities for future cooperation between the two countries by building joint plants and increasing investments," he said.

As reported, Iran's exports to Kyrgyzstan for the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2021) amounted to 20,000 tons worth $33 million, which is an increase of 261 percent in terms of value and 349 percent in terms of volume, compared to the same period last Iranian year.
