ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 9. The financial capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty, leads in terms of the share of SMEs in the country's GDP, Trend reports.
Data from the Kazakhstan Institute of Economic Research shows that the contribution of business in Almaty amounted to 10.7 percent as of January 1, 2023.
Financial capital also leads by a large margin in terms of registered and active small and medium-sized enterprises. Thus, about 387,000 SMEs were registered in the city, and just over 86 percent are operating, employing a total of just over 870,000 people as of August 1, 2023. At the same time, the total share of active entrepreneurs across the entire republic was 16.3 percent. The indicator is the highest among all regions of the country.
In total, business entities during this period produced products worth 4 trillion tenge (about $8.6 billion), of which medium-sized businesses produced products worth 0.7 trillion tenge (about 1.5 billion), and small businesses produced products worth 3.3 trillion tenge (about $7.1 billion).
The total share of Almaty's business output in relation to the republican one is 28.5 percent.
In terms of industry, the majority of entrepreneurs are engaged in wholesale and retail trade (117,500 units, or 40.2 percent), real estate transactions (19,200 units, or 6.6 percent), and professional, scientific, and technical activities (16,200 units, or 5.5 percent).
