DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, August 25. The World Food Program (WFP) distributed 940 tons of food to over 56,000 vulnerable individuals across 21 districts of Tajikistan in July 2023, as part of an emergency program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Trend reports.

According to WFP, responding to the escalating food insecurity in Tajikistan, USAID granted $10 million to WFP Tajikistan in February 2023. Within the framework of this initiative, beneficiaries will receive unconditional food assistance, along with support for their livelihoods.

Furthermore, during July, progress was made in the construction and rehabilitation of 28 assets in Tajikistan under the Climate Change Adaptation project, funded by the Green Climate Fund. These assets include 15 drinking water systems, 10 irrigation canals, and three storage buildings across 11 districts.

While developing these assets, WFP provided cash transfers amounting to 132,983 somoni ($12,950) to 259 households in four districts of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). This financial support was aimed at addressing their immediate food and other household needs.

WFP has been actively involved in Tajikistan since 1993 and currently operates under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026), initiated in January 2023.

The strategic plan outlines specific goals for the coming years. By 2026, the aim is to strengthen the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas through the improvement of climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agri-food value chains.
