BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. Turkmenistan plans to increase electricity exports to foreign countries by the end of 2022 and bring this figure to 9 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), Trend reports citing Turkmenportal.

This was stated by the Chairman of the upper house of Parliament of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

According to him, the commissioning of a new combined cycle power plant in the Mary region of Turkmenistan in September 2018 allowed increasing the export of electricity by 3 billion kWh.

Furthermore, Berdimuhammedov noted that currently Turkmen electricity is exported to Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Excess electricity generated at the Dashoguz State Power Plant is exported to Uzbekistan.

In February 2020, construction of a 220-kilovolt transmission line from the Mary State Power Plant in Turkmenistan to the Afghan city of Herat began. This will provide an opportunity to export electricity to Pakistan and other South Asian countries in transit through Afghanistan.
