AIDS Crisis in Iranian Religious Centre

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend / According to the statistic indices divulged in Iran, the AIDS virus is spread mostly in Ghom City which is considered to be the religious centre of Iran.

The number of those who were infected during sexual intercourse far exceeds the number of those who were infected though contaminated syringes, Dunyabulteni quoted the Iranian Health Minister Amir Akbari. The reports of the Health Ministry, which caused enough ado in the Iranian mass media, say that the total number of AIDS carriers is 324, and 57 have already died from the disease.

Some 40% of the infected are between 25 and 40 years old, 32% between 35 and 44 years and 18% between 45 and 54 years old.

According to Akbari, the hospitals are not equipped with the necessary medications. The most advantageous approach to fighting against AIDS is educative work carried out amongst the population.

According to non-official reports, the number of infected Ghom residents totals 1,500. Religious figures will be also be involved into treating the problem, Akbari said.

According to official reports, the total number of AIDS infected in Iran is 16,000.
