Iran launches over 40 projects on renewable energy

Iranian government has launched 47 projects for developing renewable energy sector in the country.

Sirous Vatankhah-Moghadam, an official at the president office in charge of developing renewable energy sector, has said that the projects are aimed at producing power from fuel cells, ISNA news agency reported.

According to the official, the projects include both, solar and wind energy.

In the meantime the country has made efforts to develop 12 fuel cell laboratories, he added.

The official further mentioned that the country is also in collaboration with a large Austrian company to produce renewable energy but he did not provide any details.

Renewable energy comprises 0.34 percent of Iran’s energy basket. The country relies heavily on natural gas in all sectors from industrial and electricity generation to urban one.

The country plans to increase the renewables capacity to7.5 gigawatt (GW) by 2030, of which 5 GW will be commenced in the next five years.

Iran’s electricity generation stood at 286 billion kilowatts hour (kWh) over the last fiscal year (ended March 20).

According to Energy Ministry, there are projects underway to bring the country’s renewable energy output to 1.054 GW over the current year.
