Iran eyes more preferential trade agreements

TEHRAN, Iran, Apr.30

Trend:

Iran should move toward establishing preferential and free tariff documents in addition to supporting domestic production, said the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister on Economic Diplomacy.

The Foreign Ministry is the leading force in establishing ties with Eurasia and insisted on a preferential trade agreement with Eurasian Economic Union, said Seyed Rasoul Mohajer, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The agreement signed in November 2019 and until 2020 Iran's export to Eurasia Economic Union had 30 percent increase despite the pandemic. We have (similar) contracts with D+8 and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) that should be operated and need the cooperation of all organizations," he added.

"There are shortcomings in operating these agreements, Turkey has 17 free tariff agreements with various countries and we have a deficiency in this regard, currently more than 50 percent of the global transaction is done based on tariff agreements and Iran should move toward this course," Mohajer noted.

"In regard to economic ties between Iran and Latin American countries, the long geographic distance has a negative effect in the economic transaction but we could use mechanism to solve the issue, currently we have good relations with these countries but they could improve. We have good relations with Brazil, Venezuela, and Cuba. The Foreign Minister Zarif travel to Cuba created a good jump in ties," he said.

The approval of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) related bills is a necessity for a banking transaction if Iran is not removed from the blacklist even if sanctions are lifted it could not profit from it. The Expediency Council is reviewing the bills and we hope to use this opportunity.
