Bread prices in Georgia forecasted to increase

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 6

By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:

The prices for bread in Georgia may slightly increase from 2022, Malkhaz Dolidze, the Chairman Association of Bread Bakers, said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

“The price of a ton of wheat has increased from $320 to $350 in international markets over the past week. The price of all the components needed for production also increases. Consequently, it is possible that the price will also change, though not dramatically,” Dolidze said.

“Russia has increased the customs duty on wheat. Although, there is almost no tax on flour, which has increased the imports by 5-6 times,” Malkhaz Dolidze said.

According to Dolidze, the only correct solution to the current situation is to increase local wheat production.

According to the National Statistics Office (Geostat), Georgia purchased 4,009 tons of flour ($1.2 million) in September 2021, compared to 532 tons ($146,400) over the same period of 2020. Thus, flour imports increased 7 times.
