BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 24. The World Bank has approved the Kakheti Connectivity Improvement Project (KCIP) aimed at connecting Georgia’s Kakheti region to the capital of Tbilisi, and the country’s highway network, Trend reports via the press service of the WB.

The project, the total cost of which is $109 million, will assist Georgia’s short-term recovery due to the COVID-19 pandemic by new jobs creation, and facilitating local income.

“High-capacity highways are a critical facilitator of Georgia’s economic growth, as they provide firms across industries with more efficient access to markets, make tourism destinations easier to reach, and provide commuters and the public with more robust access to key services and opportunities, such as health and education facilities and jobs,” Sebastian Molineus, the WB Regional Director for the South Caucasus, said.

The KCIP project will include the construction of a 17-kilometers long four-lane highway between Sagarejo and Badiauri, as part of the Tbilisi-Bakurtsikhe-Lagodekhi highway corridor linking Kakheti with Tbilisi and the rest of the country.

In addition, Georgia will construct the first three sections of the corridor from Tbilisi to Sagarejo, using the same design, construction, fiduciary, environmental and social protection mechanisms. The corridor is expected to be operational by 2025.

With the support of the WB, Georgia has already implemented several important projects in the Kakheti region such as the construction of the Gurjaani bypass road and the first result-based intrastate road rehabilitation program in the country, Irakli Karseladze, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, said.
