Egypt has recognized South Sudan as an independent state whose birth was officially declared on Saturday at a high-profile ceremony in the capital Juba, DPA reported.
Egypt's stance was announced by Foreign Minister Mohamed al-Orabi upon his arrival in Juba for the ceremony, according to diplomatic sources in Cairo.
Egypt is keen to have strong ties with South Sudan and would support efforts aimed at resolving outstanding issues between it and Sudan, al-Orabi has indicated.
On a visit in March, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf signalled Egypt's interest in strengthening links with its southern neighbour.
