A British national was killed when his car blew up in Yemen's port city of Aden on Wednesday, dpa reported according to state-run Yemeni television.

According to the Yemeni media, the victim worked for an Aden-based company. It was reported that the man was killed in the Moalla area of Aden, near a hotel where the company has an office.

Yemeni officials have blamed a rise in violence in Aden on al-Qaeda militants, whom they accuse of taking advantage of the turmoil in the country resulting from an uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh's rule that has been ongoing since February.

The Foreign Office in London has confirmed the death of one of its nationals in Yemen, but failed to give details.

On April 26, 2010, the British ambassador to Yemen was targeted in a car bomb that hit his convoy in Sanaa.
