( dpa ) - Denmark was to deploy up to four helicopters to be used for reconnaissance missions in Afghanistan, the government said Tuesday.

Defence Minister Soren Gade said the helicopters would help increase surveillance "beyond enemy lines" and "increase security of road transports."

The deployment included some 50-75 troops and the helicopters were due to be in Afghanistan within two months, a defence ministry statement said.

The some 780-strong Danish forces in Afghanistan have sustained 15 fatalities since 2002. They operate mainly in the restive Helmand province.

Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller said according to Danish news agency Ritzau that all parties in the Danish parliament backed the decision to deploy the Fennec helicopters that earlier have been used in Iraq.
