US may accelerate withdrawal of troops from Iraq: report
The United States may begin a faster withdrawal of its forces from Iraq, beginning as early as in September, the New York Times reported Sunday, citing unnamed US government and military sources. ( dpa )
According to the report, between one and three combat brigades could be withdrawn by the end of the term of current US President George W Bush.
The Times also cited sources as saying that the draw-down would had as much to do with the increasing violence in Afghanistan as with the improved readiness of Iraqi forces to take over the job of securing Iraq.
More security personnel died in Afghanistan in May and June than died in Iraq during the same time period, the report said.
