Germany's Federal Convention - a body which meets expressly to pick the country's head of state - will meet on June 30 after Monday's surprise resignation of the last president, parliamentary leader Norbert Lammert announced Tuesday.

Former president Horst Koehler announced his resignation on Monday, after a scandal about his comments regarding the role of the military in overseas operations.

The convention includes the entire membership of the parliament, plus delegates sent by the 16 federal states. The job of president is largely ceremonial.
