At least eight people have been wounded and one other killed in an armed shootout on Sunday near the capital of Russia's volatile Republic of Chechnya, a regional investigator told RIA Novosti.

The investigator said that six soldiers, one policeman and a passerby were injured in the shootout at a checkpoint between the cities of Grozny and Argun. He added five vehicles came under fire near the checkpoint.

"A group of unidentified people in the afternoon opened fire from their vehicle...at a checkpoint that is guarded by servicemen," he said.

He said the body of an unidentified man has been discovered near the checkpoint and he is suspected of being one of the gunmen.
