The European Commission will "very strictly monitor" the implementation in Denmark of reinforced border controls to ensure they are in line with Europe's free movement regulations, a spokesman said Tuesday as the new measures came into effect, DPA reported.
"The commission expects the Danish authorities to pursue all efforts to guarantee that the measures are in line with the (border-free) Schengen law," Michele Cercone, spokesman for European Union Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom, said in Brussels.
"The commission will very strictly monitor the implementation of this first phase of the Danish agreement to be sure that European law is fully respected," he added.
Commission experts are also in the midst of evaluating documents submitted by Denmark to justify the move, Cercone said. The Schengen treaty outlaws "systematic" border controls, but does allow spot checks under specific circumstances.
