The Spanish capital Madrid will be candidate to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon announced Wednesday, DPA reported.
Madrid failed in its bids to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, which were held in London, and the 2016 Games, which went to Rio de Janeiro.
"The Olympic spirit remains alive among citizens" in the city, Ruiz-Gallardon said.
Rome has also announced a bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Other candidates are expected to include Istanbul, Tokyo, Doha and Dubai.
In 2016, Madrid argued that it already had 77 per cent of the infrastructure necessary to stage the Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
