The economic crisis in Greece has affected the marriage and divorce market, with a considerable decline due to the financial cost of a grand wedding or legal separation, the Athens News Agency (ANA) said Tuesday, reported dpa.

Figures from the City of Athens Registry Service showed the number of people getting divorced to have declined by 25 per cent in the past few years.

Approximately 1,579 divorces were registered in Athens in 2006 and the number started to decline in 2009 after the outbreak of the economic crisis, falling to 1,149 in 2010.

Meanwhile, more and more Greeks are opting not to get married in recent years.
