A bus on Tuesday fell from a 12-metre-high raised road in the Philippines in heavy rain, leaving the driver dead and six injured, police said, dpa reported.

Superintendent Edwin Butacan, spokesman for the highway police, said the driver died while being treated for head injuries.

Two of the injured were in critical condition in hospital, he said.

Butacan said police were investigating reports that the bus was racing with another vehicle before the accident in the Manila suburban city of Paranaque.

"The driver must have lost control of the bus," he said.

But an official of the bus operator, Dimple Star Transport, said the accident occurred when the vehicle was pummeled by strong winds.

"The driver couldn't control the steering wheel because of the strong winds," said Nilda Napat, the company's finance manager.
