Cargo, passenger traffic via Turkish Sabiha Gokcen Airport slumps amid pandemic

As many as 159,637 tons of cargo were transported through Turkey’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport from January through October 2020, slumping by 52 percent compared to the same period of 2019, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey told Trend.­­­­

According to the ministry, in the reporting period, the country’s domestic flights transported 84,395 tons of cargo, showing a 34-percent drop over the year.

At the same time, 75,242 tons of cargo were transported through Sabiha Gokcen Airport by international flights, which plunged by 63 percent year-on-year, the ministry said.

The Sabiha Gokcen Airport served over 14.2 million passengers during the past 10 months of this year, which is 52 percent less than in the same period of last year.

More than 9.89 million passengers were served on domestic flights over the reporting period, while a year earlier this indicator was 52 percent more.

In the past 10 months of 2020, 4.38 million passengers were served on international flights, down 63 percent compared to the same months of last year.

Meanwhile, 104,519 flights were carried out through Sabiha Gokcen Airport, which is 47 percent less compared to the same period of 2019.

From January through October 2020, 69,652 flights were carried out on domestic flights, which is 39 percent less than in the same period of last year.

International flights via Sabiha Gokcen Airport dropped by 59 percent over the year, amounting to 34,867 flights.

Air traffic in Turkey from January through October of this year decreased by 45.9 percent and amounted to 722,084 flights. Meanwhile, over 70.5 million passengers were served at all Turkish airports.

During the reporting period, more than 1.96 million tons of cargo were transported through all airports in the country.
