The short circuit caused the explosion at the plant of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense Industry in the city of Shirvan, the ministry said July 6.

The short circuit occurred in one of the workshops of the Telemekhanika plant of the ministry, which caused a fire at 11:30 (UTC/GMT +4 hours) July 6. As a result of the fire, an explosion occurred, the statement said.

The blast killed one person, 19 were hospitalized. Some 13 of them have already been discharged home. The rest injured are being treated.

The Telemekhanika plant started working in 1981 under the name of the Plant of devices. An industrial automation and telemechanics plant was built near it in 1985. These enterprises were merged under the name of the Industrial automation and telemechanics plant in 1989.

The Telemekhanika production association was established on its base in 1991.

The Telemekhanika production association has begun its activity under the State Committee for Special Engineering and Conversion of the Azerbaijan Republic since 1993.

The Telemekhanika production association has been renamed into the Telemekhanika plant since September 2006. It continues its activity under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense Industry.
