Some 1.72 billion cubic meters of gas was pumped into the underground gas storage facilities of Azerbaijan as of Sept.16, 2014, a source at the country's State Oil Company (SOCAR) told Trend.

Azerbaijan has two underground gas storage facilities, Kalmaz and Garadagh.

Garadagh storage facility accounted for 929.82 million cubic meters of the total volume of gas pumped into the underground gas storage facilities, while nearly 791.95 million cubic meters fell to the Kalmaz storage, according to the source.

Currently, the active gas volume in the country's underground gas storage facilities exceeds 3.1 billion cubic meters, some 1.68 billion cubic meters of which is stored in the Garadagh storage, while 1.42 billion cubic meters fell to Kalmaz.

The residual volume of gas in the underground gas storage facilities stood at nearly 1.38 billion cubic meters (746.43 million cubic meters in Garadagh and some 630.6 million cubic meters in Kalmaz), as a result of gas extraction from the storage facilities.

By the end of last season of gas injection the volumes of gas in underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan exceeded 3.43 billion cubic meters, compared to about 3.3 billion cubic meters in accordance with the results of the previous season of gas injection.

Azerbaijan's underground gas storage facilities are capable of storing over 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas.
