Considering the development of Azerbaijan, a reduction of domestic waste emissions is an important factor.

In this regard, the Temiz Sheher Company is running a long term awareness campaign, the company chairman Zakir Ibrahimov stated on Tuesday at an event dedicated to the Waste Calculator project.

The main goal of this campaign is the regulation of the consumption level and the call to reduce waste.

"A number of projects have been carried out in Azerbaijan on the reduction of waste emissions and in particular the construction of a sorting plant of solid waste and a waste incineration plant producing electricity from recycled domestic waste, as well as the project of integrated waste management in Baku were implemented by the Ministry of Economic Development and the World Bank, Ibrahimov stated.

However, accordingly, in addition to these projects there is a need in other long term projects including informing the public on issues related to waste disposal. One of these projects is the launch of an electronic 'waste calculator', so it will be possible to control the amount of waste discharged per person (family) daily.

According to the organisation's department head on project management and public relations Ogtay Mammadov, the project will also monitor emissions into the atmosphere creating a thermal effect.

According to statistics, the average person produces one kilogramme of garbage a day. However, through the new calculator it will be possible to control the amount of waste and reduce it, he noted.

"A Waste Calculator is just one project in the long term programme of our company on the reduction of domestic waste. Apart from this project, we are planning to implement a number of other projects and activities," Mammadov added.

Communications director of the EnviroComms Company Stephen Bates noted in his speech that managing domestic waste is an important issue for any state and proper waste management can bring great benefit to the country. Moreover, proper waste management involves not only financial benefits, but also the creation of new jobs and benefits to the environment of the country.

Bates also emphasised the fact that society has a crucial role in reducing the amount of waste and so must be informed and involved in the process.

The glossary in the field of waste management was presented at the event.

In his speech, chairman of the Public Association of Socio-Economic Research Azad Aliyev noted that the dictionary will serve as an auxiliary tool for scientists, environmentalists, students, and contribute to the concept of solid domestic waste management.

The event was organised with the support of Temiz Sheher.
