Azerbaijan's election to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member indicates its authority and recognition in the world, Chairperson of the Federation Council of Russia, Valentina Matvienko believes.
"It opens up new opportunities for our cooperation in the international sphere. Our countries' positions are close or coincide on many issues. Azerbaijan's election to the UN Security Council will enable us to more effectively cooperate in considering and addressing many international issues," Matvienko told reporters in Baku on Monday.
Since January, Azerbaijan is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
According to Matvienko, a dialogue at the highest political level progresses very actively.
During two-day visit to Azerbaijan, Matvienko is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the country and the parliament.
Matvienko is also expected to visit the Baku Slavic University.
On Monday Matvienko visited the Alley of Honors and Alley of Martyrs.
