About one thousand prisoners in the correctional facility No. 14 in the city of Geguti (Guria region, Western Georgia) started a hunger strike in protest against maltreatment.

The relatives and friends of the prisoners who require a meeting with representatives of the administration gathered at the correctional facility on Friday.

Georgian public defender's representative, Giorgi Labadze has already visited the correctional facility.

He met with one of the prisoners, who spoke about the maltreatment, showed signs of beating and demanded taking needed measures.

Labadze said that the prisoner's body has signs of physical impact, but their cause should be clarified by experts.

Georgian Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili intends to visit the Geguti prison in order to clarify the situation.
