United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is working on preparing Turkmenistan for People's Council elections, which will be held in December 2010, according to a press release of the UN.

The People's Council meets annually to discuss issues of national scale and serves as a consultative body.

UNDP builds capacity of electoral commissions Turkmenistan through training on how to BRIDGE (Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections).
This training involves a total of 80 members of the district election commissions in all five provinces of the country and in Ashgabat. Training was conducted by groups of staff of the regional electoral commissions, who were previously trained in Ashgabat upon BRIDGE.

BRIDGE trainings are organized in a concentrated effort to strengthen the capacity of the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan and its field offices under the UNDP project "Cooperation to strengthen the electoral system and processes in Turkmenistan."

This year the UN will hold in Turkmenistan an experimental initiative to train international electoral standards and principles, strategic and financial planning, communication with the media during elections.

The training program in provinces (regions) is similar to the training program for members of the regional electoral commissions in Ashgabat.

UNDP project "Cooperation to strengthen the electoral system and processes in Turkmenistan." was launched in 2008.
It is implemented in collaboration with the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights of Turkmenistan with the financial support of the Government of Norway.
