FM: Azerbaijan condemns law on genocide adopted by France
Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 24 / Trend S. Agayeva /
Azerbaijan strongly condemns the law on the "Armenian Genocide" adopted by France, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
"The Azerbaijani Republic deeply regrets about the law criminalizing the denial of the genocide adopted by the French Senate," the Foreign Ministry said. "Azerbaijan strongly condemns this decision. The French Senate's unilateral steps, contrary to the principles of democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, can cause serious damage to the participation of this country in regional processes and lead to unpleasant consequences."
The French Senate adopted the bill. Some 127 senators voted in favor, while 86 voted against on Jan.23, TRT Haber TV channel reported.
The law demands about a year's imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euro for denying the so-called "genocide."
