An observation mission from GUAM plans to conduct a more large scale monitoring of the presidential election in Azerbaijan.

Representatives of the 'Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM' will conduct a more large scale monitoring and visit a large number of polling stations both in Baku and in Azerbaijan's regions, GUAM Secretariat told Trend on Tuesday.

GUAM will send a mission to Azerbaijan in early October to observe the presidential election in the country which is scheduled for October 9. The mission will conduct monitoring and meet with presidential candidates, the secretariat said.

Azerbaijan will hold presidential elections on October 9.

The elections are held in the country each 5 years. Azerbaijani citizens who have higher education, who have been permanently residing in the country for more than 10 years, who have not been convicted on a serious crime, not having any obligations to other states and those who do not have double citizenship are entitled to the right to be elected to the post of president of Azerbaijan.

To date the documents of 18 persons were presented to the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan for their approval as presidential candidates and 15 out if them were approved.

Signature lists were presented to these people for the collection of more than 40,000 signatures to support their registration as candidates for the post of president.

This year the missions from PACE, OSCE, OSCE/ODIHR, CIS, GUAM and other international structures will observe the elections in Azerbaijan.
