London Commemorates Victims of Azerbaijan Genocide

UK, London, 1 April / Trend corr G. Ahmadova/ The event dedicated to 31 March - the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis - took place in London at the House of Azerbaijan. In attendance were the Azerbaijani Ambassador to UK Fakhraddin Gurbanov, the representatives of the Turkish, Cyprian and South-Azerbaijani diasporas, foreign guests and the students studying in UK.

The event began a speech from Alibey Atalar, owner of the London-based House of Azerbaijan. Later the guests watched a documentary chronicle of the events which took place in 1918.

In his speech Ambassador Gurbanov said that all Azerbaijanis should remember the tragic events of those years.

"I think in recent years a lot has been done to popularize the truth about Azerbaijan and its history. And we still have to carry out more active work in this connection. We mark the Day of Azerbaijani Genocide not to show our weakness, but to fix the historical facts in our minds forever," he said.

The Azerbaijani people should remember 31 March as one of the tragic pages in the history of the country. The mass repressions and violence may be considered as one of the most tragic pages in the history of the 20th century. This tragic history of the Azerbaijani people reflects the Armenian chauvinism regarding the .creation of the Great Armenia who utilize any means to achieve that goal.

According to the decree signed by the Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev in 1998, 31 March shall be marked as the Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
