The victims of 20 January tragedy were commemorated in Ukraine as a result of the joint activities of the Union of Azerbaijani Youth of Ukraine (UAYU), Ukrainian Assembly of Students and Youth under the Parliament of Ukraine and the Azerbaijani Embassy in Ukraine, UAYU told Trend.

The victims of 20 January tragedy were commemorated in Ukraine as a result of the joint activities of the Union of Azerbaijani Youth of Ukraine (UAYU), Ukrainian Assembly of Students and Youth under the Parliament of Ukraine and the Azerbaijani Embassy in Ukraine, UAYU told Trend.

The event, held under the motto "Ülviləşən Mübariz", UAYU chairman Anar Tahirov said that the vast majority of those who died for the territorial integrity of the country was young.

The main purpose of this event is to instill the feelings of patriotism, which 20-year-old Ulvi Buniyatzade left sacrificing himself on January 20, for today's youth and rose to the top the heroism of Mubariz Ibrahimov, who brought a crushing blow to the enemy.

Addressing the event, counselor of the Embassy of Azerbaijan Yegana Kavkazly, UAYU deputy chairman Javid Huseynov, a leading journalist of Ukrainian national television Andrew Ohrimovich, deputy chairman of the Youth Assembly under the Parliament of Ukraine Olesya Khlopets told that the memory of heroes who sacrificed their lives for their country will live forever in the hearts of the people.  

The Soviet Army commenced military operations against Azerbaijan early morning Jan. 20, 1990, before declaring a state of emergency. The tragedy claimed the lives of 131 people, including 117 Azerbaijanis, six Russians, three Jews and three Tatars. Some 744 people were severely injured. Four went missing and 400 were arrested. Twenty-one people were killed after a state of emergency was declared on Jan. 20. Twenty-six people were killed in the Neftchala and Lankaran regions.
