By Emin Aliyev - Trend:

Azerbaijani State Customs Committee sees no need to change the tariff rates in the country.

The customs tariffs applied today in Azerbaijan meet the requirements of the national economic development, chairman of the State Customs Committee, Lieutenant General of Azerbaijani Customs Service Aydin Aliyev told Trend.

"As is known, the strategy of sustainable economic development implemented in the country justifies itself as before. Each completed year is marked by the growth of strategic indicators such as GDP volume in Azerbaijan. If we consider the crisis nature of the last year for the global economy, the positive trend in the country's GDP volume is an encouraging factor also because this growth was achieved through the non-oil sector," Aliyev said.

Aliyev believes that the development of the non-oil sector and the organization of competitive domestic production are directly related to the customs and tariff policy.

"Thus, in order to ensure the country's economic security and to expand the range of goods produced in the country, the practice of partial or full exemption of import of various raw materials, equipment and materials for production purposes of VAT and customs duties is applied in the case of necessity. Alongside with this, the maximum rate of customs duty of 15 percent is imposed on some types of finished products in order to protect the domestic production from the foreign competition, the head of the State Customs Committee said.

Meanwhile, the law "On Customs Tariff" has entered into force which, alongside with providing an effective communication of domestic and foreign markets and the formation of customs tariffs, is based on strong legal basis for the application of anti-dumping, countervailing and other duties and aims to protect the country's economic interests in the future, according to Aliyev.

"In addition, taking into account the dynamics of the national economic development in the medium term, the draft laws "On State Regulation of Foreign Trade Activity" and "On anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures" are being worked out," Aliyev said.
