In 2017, Azerbaijan exported 7,619 horses, which is by 6.6 times higher than in 2016, according to the Export Review published by Azerbaijan's Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communications on April 6.

According to the report, the average price of one horse (for meat) in 2017 was $148, whereas a year earlier this figure was $141.

Over the past two years, Azerbaijan mainly exported horses to neighboring Kazakhstan.

Given the export attractiveness of horses and horseflesh, the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry conducted an analysis of export opportunities and potential export markets.

The studies showed that horseflesh is one of the most used types of meat in Europe. According to the data of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about 741,000 tons of horse meat and mule meat are produced a year in 78 countries around the world.

Horseflesh for $370 million is exported annually in the world. Italy, Belgium and France are the largest importers of horseflesh in the world, which account for more than 50 percent of all world imports.

The average import value of horseflesh is $3,800 a ton.

The analysis of potential markets for Azerbaijani horseflesh showed that along with Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan can export horseflesh to China, Russia, as well as European countries such as Luxembourg, Slovakia and Slovenia.
