The volume of cargo transportation via the Viking train route in 2018 amounted to almost 42,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), which is 9.6 percent less as compared to 2017 (46,451 TEUs), the Lithuanian Railways told Trend.
"As for 2019, we plan to increase the cargo transportation,“ the company stressed.
Further, the Lithuanian Railways added that for now, there are no plans to add new countries to the project.
The Viking train began to run in 2003. Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia are participants of the project. Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey joined the project later. The total length of its Ilyichevsk (Ukraine)-Minsk (Belarus)-Draugiste (Lithuania) route is 1,766 kilometers.
The main freight consists of vehicles and its parts, textile products, metal products, products of the chemical industry.
