National Statistics Office of Georgia changes unemployment measurement methodology

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 1

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Subsistence farmers will no longer be recorded as self-employed by National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), said Director of the office Gogita Todradze, Trend reports referring Georgian media.

Geostat will change unemployment measurement methodology, the director said.

Todradze added that the National Statistics Office of Georgia has started conducting new surveys since January of this year based on which it collects unemployment data from 6,400 households.

To date, about 49-50 percent of employed people in Georgia are self-employed. About 840,000 people are self-employed, of which 75 percent are engaged in agricultural activities.

"Out of self-employed people who are engaged in agricultural activities, 70-80 percent are subsistence farmers who are no longer considered self-employed and thus, they will be deducted from the employed category,” Todradze said.

He noted that these farmers will not be directly considered as unemployed as they should meet other criteria including seeking a job and readiness to work to be registered as such.
