Pharmaceutical exports from India to Uzbekistan have particularly risen during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan Manish Prabhat told Trend commenting on the current situation relating to the cooperation between Uzbekistan and India in the pharmaceutical sector.

“Even before the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, India and Uzbekistan had been working towards the proposal for joint pharmaceutical production,” Prabhat said.

According to the ambassador, India is one of the largest exporters of pharmaceuticals to the region and is one of the major sources of imports by Uzbekistan. The government of Uzbekistan is keen to attract leading Indian companies to manufacture pharmaceuticals products in Uzbekistan.

“While some Indian companies are already working in this field, cooperation in this field received a boost when Chief Minister of the State of Gujarat from India, Shri Vijay Rupani visited Uzbekistan in October 2019. He led a strong business delegation of companies from Gujarat and visited the Andijan region with which Gujarat has a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation (MoUs). During his visit, more than 20 B2B agreements and MoUs were signed,” the ambassador outlined.

In addition, a leading Indian pharmaceuticals company Cadila Pharmaceuticals announced an investment in starting a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the Andijan region with an investment of $50 million.

Prabhat also stressed that further work is going on in this field, particularly encouraged by the fact that a Free Pharmaceutical Zone has been established in Andijan for attracting manufacture by Indian companies.
