BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 21

By Amina Nazarli - Trend:

Farmers in Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz region will plant twice as many spring onions this year as they did last, Trend reports referring to the "Turkmenistan: Golden Age" electronic newspaper.

The districts of Gurbansoltan-edzhe and Niyazov in the region are the largest producers of spring onions, with 550 and 490 hectares of onions planned to be grown, respectively this year.

The districts are finishing up complex work to prepare the land for planting to be scheduled for February 25.

This year, the region will also mass plant autumn and winter onions, supplying the country's consumer market with this vegetable all year.

Earlier it was reported that Turkmenistan plans to sow potatoes and other vegetable and gourd crops across the country on 106,000 hectares of land for 2022. From those lands, some 65,000 hectares will be set aside for spring sowing, with the remaining 41,000 hectares put aside for autumn sowing.

The country intends to plant 30,000 hectares of potatoes and 10,000 hectares of onions this February.

Agriculture is one of Turkmenistan's most important economic sectors. Wheat, cotton, rice, sugar beets, fodder, vegetables, melons, fruit, and berry crops are the main types of agricultural crops grown in the country.

In the county agriculture development is carried out on a scientific basis. Various agricultural crops are grown, with the agroecological characteristics of the country's regions taken into account.

In Turkmenistan, special emphasis is placed on increasing production volume. As a result, the country has increased its production of vegetables, fruits, and berries in recent years, as well as expanded its area of perennial plants, vineyards, and greenhouses.
