Iran reveals forecasts on onion harvesting for current year

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 23. More than 3 million tons of onions are expected to be harvested from 61,700 hectares of agricultural land in Iran for the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), Iranian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad and Director General of the ministry’s Fodder and Vegetable Production Bureau, Hossein Asghari told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to Asghari, about 1.4 million tons of onions were harvested in Iran during the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2022).

He also added that more than 1.6 million tons of onions are expected to be harvested in the second half of the current Iranian year.

“Meanwhile, last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), a total of 3.2 million tons of onions were harvested from 67,800 hectare of land in the country,” the deputy minister said.

The director general noted that onion is grown in 30 provinces of the country. Generally, on average, 600,000 tons of onions are grown in Kerman Province per year, 500,000 tons in Fars Province, 350,000 tons in Hormozgan Province, and 200,000 tons in Kermanshah Province.

In addition, Iran exported about 157,000 tons of onions to Iraq and Pakistan. in 6 months of the current Iranian year, Asghari pointed out.

The deputy minister also added that last Iranian year, Iran's onion export stood at about 410,000 tons worth $85.3 million.
