Iran limits electricity supply to cryptocurrency centers

TEHRAN, Iran, May.24

Trend:

Iran Power Transmission, Generation, and Distribution Company (TAVANIR) has arranged to limit the electricity supply to legal cryptocurrency centers.

The following action is implemented due to the 20 percent increase of power consumption in the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2021) compared to the consumption level in the last Iranian year (started March 20, 2020) and preventing power cut in the residential sector, Trend reports citing Fars News Agency.

The estimated power consumption for cryptocurrency mining is 300 megawatt while statistics show cryptocurrency mining in Iran was more than 2,000 megawatt therefore around 60 percent of active cryptocurrency centers in the country that illegally work are threatening the power network.

The power consumption of legal and illegal cryptocurrency centers is only 3 percent of the country's power peak load and the remaining 97 percent is related to industrial, agricultural, and home consumers.
