Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem have discussed the ways to end the crisis in Syria through diplomatic means, PressTV reported.

At the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, Muallem elaborated on the latest developments in the Arab country and the two sides discussed ways of resolving the crisis through dialogue.

The Iranian and Syrian foreign ministers also examined the extensive ties between Tehran and Damascus and underlined the need for promoting the existing cooperation.

The meeting came after the UN Security Council approved a resolution on September 27 that obliges Damascus to comply with an international plan to see its chemical weapons eliminated.

At the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York and during several meetings held on the sidelines of the event, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani repeatedly stressed that the crisis in Syria should be settled through political means.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
