A bus tour of the US South-west turned to tragedy for a group of Chinese tourists in an accident that claimed seven lives, CNN reported Saturday.

The situation was critical for another five of the 16 passengers who were injured but survived.

The bus turned over on Friday its way from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday, blocking traffic on a road that leads to Hoover Dam, about 30 kilometres distant from the accident site, dpa reported.

Some of the injured and dead were thrown out of the vehicle onto the street, according to eyewitness reports.

Language difficulties slowed down the rescue work and identification of the victims, the report said.
