A magnitude 6.0 earthquake has struck off the coast of Makira Island in the South Pacific's Solomon Islands, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said Sunday, Sputnik reported.

The submarine earthquake took place at 05:46 GMT just 83 kilometers away from the island provincial capital of Kirakira and was at the depth of over 39 kilometers (24 miles), according to the USGS.

No casualties or damage to structures has so far been reported.

The Solomon Islands archipelago is located in the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
