Uzbekenergo, which unites enterprises of Uzbekistan’s power industry, has completed modernization of the Talimarjan Thermal Power Plant worth $1.32 billion in Kashkadarya Region, said the company Jan. 17.

Two new combined cycle generating units, each with 450 MW of capacity, have been commissioned within the modernization project, the press service of the Uzbekenergo said.

In March 2013, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Daewoo International – the winners of a tender announced by the Uzbekenergo – signed a contract worth $861 million with the energy company to modernize the Talimarjan Thermal Power Plant.

The contract stipulated construction of two new combined cycle generating units at the plant. The supplier for the new combined cycle generating unit was Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation.

The project was financed with loans from the Asian Development Bank ($350 million), Japan International Cooperation Agency ($300 million), the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan ($250 million) and Uzbekenergo’s own funds.

The modernization of the Talimarjan Thermal Power Plant will increase its capacity to 2,600 MW and improve the energy supply to the southern regions of Uzbekistan, as well as increase the potential of electricity export.
