Azerbaijani parliament: OSCE Minsk Group should move to concrete actions

Azerbaijan, Baku, March 2 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

First Deputy Speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament Ziyafat Asgarov urged the OSCE Minsk Group on resolving Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to move to actions.

If the MG co-chairs are content with only statements, there will no progress in resolving the conflict, Asgarov told journalists on Friday.

If the co-chairs are interested in resolving the conflict, then they need to exert influence upon Armenia and make it take a constructive position, he said. Otherwise, their activities will not be effective and successful, Asgarov said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
