Kerry headed to Russia next week

Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Russia for "overdue" talks with officials next week in Moscow, he said Tuesday, dpa reported.

Kerry announced the visit to reporters after a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.

"The visit, in my judgement, is overdue," Kerry said.

He said he looked forward to the consultations, "particularly given the range of issues that we need to discuss, from Syria to Iran to the upcoming G-8 summit in little more than a month."

Relations between Washington and Moscow have been damaged in recent months amid disagreements over the conflict in Syria, as well as a US crackdown on Russian violators of human rights that prompted Russia to respond with a ban on US adoptions of Russian children.
