Major fire broke out at the Abadan Petrochemical Plant (UPDATE 2)

A major fire broke out at the Abadan Petrochemical Plant on Sunday, MEHR news agency reported.

According to primary data, one person is injured and sent to hospital.

All fire brigades of the city and workers of the Emergency Situations Ministry of Iran sent to the scene.There is a possibility of a new explosion at the plant, the agency said.

Abadan is covered with acrid black smoke, and ll roads to the plant are closed,the agency reported.

According to preliminary reports, the cause of the fire was a short circuit in the stock of the PVC, the head of the Abadan Petrochemical Plant Muslim Rahimi said.

According to him, a fire occurred early on Sunday morning and the fire is extinguished.

The fire didn't effect the work of a petrochemical plant, the deputy mayor of the town of Abadan Bahram Ilhaszade said.

Now the amount of damage is specified, and works on ensuring the safety are underway, said Ilhaszade.

Abadan Petrochemical Plant is the oldest Iranian petrochemical plant.

The plant produces 150,000 ton of chemicals annually.
