BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 17. Climate protection is one of the pressing global issues that cannot be addressed without joint efforts, said Mahmadtair Zokirzoda, Speaker of the Tajikistan House of Representatives, Trend reports.
Speaking at a session on "Setting the scene: understanding the real impact of climate change " within COP29 Parliamentary Meeting organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Azerbaijani Parliament, Zokirzoda emphasized that we are witnessing global warming, which poses serious challenges to achieving sustainable development in various countries, including Tajikistan.
“The UN's decisions on water and climate issues are of great importance, and we believe that the participants of today's high-level Parliamentary Meeting will also contribute to this work. Joint efforts will be made in this regard. We must take urgent practical measures, utilize renewable energy sources, and transition to green energy. Many countries have significant resources for this. The use of renewable energy will positively impact the development of a green economy," he said.
Zokirzoda further added that the decisions made at COP29 will help establish mechanisms for cooperation at national, regional, and international levels.
To note, the Parliamentary Meeting started its work in Baku within COP29 under the joint organization of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Azerbaijani Parliament. Sevil Mikayilova, the Vice President of the IPU from Azerbaijan and a member of the Azerbaijani parliament, is taking part in the event.
The two-day event will bring together 92 delegations from 66 countries and international organizations, up to 330 participants, 167 Members of Parliament led by 12 Speakers and Deputy Speakers.
Sessions at the Parliamentary Meeting will discuss the real impacts of climate change, the parliaments' role in making climate commitments a reality and raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions, unpacking the global climate finance architecture and mobilizing resources and streamlining access to climate finance, enhancing resilience in the face of climate change and scaling up adaptation and strengthening local empowerment. The final document will be adopted.
The event will also include several bilateral meetings.
