The Republican Toxicology Laboratory of the State Phytosanitary Control Service intends to test the nitrate content in melons and watermelons sold on Baku markets, lab head Yaqub Ibrahimov told Trend.

"We started to check agricultural products on the wholesale markets," he said. "The control measures will be undertaken at all, more than ten capital markets."

He said that while checking the wholesale market in the settlement "8 kilometer", much nitrates were revealed in melons taken from Sabirabad and Kurdamir regions.

"Their sale is banned until new laboratory results are received," he said. "The use of nitrate fertilizers is considered to be natural while cultivating agricultural products. But all depends on their
concentration. This does not mean that the whole crop is not suitable for consumption."

Moreover, nitrate fertilizers are used 5-6 times in Azerbaijan, while cultivating agricultural products. But they are used 15-20 times in the products imported from foreign countries. It is confirmed by the
fact that domestic production is ecologically safe.
